How They Met

Going from not knowing what you want, to seeing exactly what your heart desires can be jarring. But in the knowing everything changes. Your mind becomes focused, your actions purposeful, and your life sets itself in line with the whatever it is that one aspires. Andy’s world was shocked by the realization that he found what he had been looking for.

Only weeks earlier he had been drifting through his new world that had been filled with heartache and a realization that nothing works out the way you think it will. For the last year or more he had tried to find himself and failed because he looked everywhere except inside. But just as he was beginning to understand where his searching would bear fruit, in his own soul, he met Christy.

Its not like it was love at first sight, because it wasn’t.

Andy had seen Christy around at church and other singles activities and thought that she was way out of his league. He was right.

Andy spent most of his time hanging out with girls much to young for him, at lest to him. He enjoyed their company but didn’t feel like he would fall for girls just a bit too young to date. They were fun, pretty, intelligent, caring, and spiritual so he enjoyed their company. He had his guy friends, but he always liked a good mix. One of the things he liked the most, is the standards they upheld. Andy respected these girls and developed a protective stance toward them.

One night while showing off, playing rick and roll songs on his guitar, a new girl came in the apartment Andy’s friends shared. It was the room mate he hadn’t met yet. He noticed that she seemed annoyed by his presences and left them to the little concert he was putting on in the living room. Andy learned this new girl name was Christy.

Andy noticed her disgust at the loud intrusion and wondered if this girl could enjoy herself. She thought he was a show-off and he thought she was a snot.

But love seems to find itself, regardless of first impressions.

The next few weeks were not much better Andy was often around and his attitude and tactless comments grated on Christy. And Christy’s obvious dislike of Andy didn’t sit well with his ‘gotta notice me’ personality.

But a phone call, and a meeting to go shopping later made them both change their minds. Once the outward walls each put up began to crumble, there was humor, and intelligence and attraction. They became confidants rather quickly considering their initial impressions of each other.

And one night while out with some friends Andy realized what it was about Christy that was different. There were so many great traits and thoughts he had about her, but it all boiled down to the fact that he knew what he wanted and that was Christy.

Andy had not made his desires well known. I mean he only just realized who he wanted. So, his weeks of teasing and flirting with all the girls left a real misdirection as to who or if he was interested in any his new friends. But now Andy knew what he wanted he decided he needed to set things right.

He would show up and try to casually spend more time with Christy. When an opportunity arose to got to a musical, Christy had free tickets, he jumped at the opportunity. Several of his guy friends also acted as if they would like to go as well, but all of them mysteriously backed out when they saw the threatening look on Andy’s face.

Andy knew what his next step would be. So, he arranged with his brother to double date, and asked Christy to the Valentine’s Day Dance.

All these plans he was making were fun, but Andy never understood how to fall in love.

It was not the events themselves, but the interaction at and between them accomplished the thing. It was the silly conversations about movies, the deep discussions about life and God. IT was the opening of his heart that happened without realizing what was going on.

You don’t fall in love and then become best friends. You become best friends first. The Valentines Dance was wonderful, but it was the night time walks before and after that turned his heart. The thoughts and beliefs of this beautiful woman melded into his own in a way that he never could understand then or since. And his life would ever be better for that winter when he found exactly the thing that he wanted, in the girl that was out of his league. And still is.
